Tourists Coaches

Carmen Tormey

I started playing frisbee as a freshman at NC State in 2014. Go Pack! Since then I’ve played with Rogue, Phoenix and Radiance. I began coaching during college, volunteering with various TU programs and assistant coaching Exploris Middle School’s team. I began coaching with Triangle Tourists in 2019 and helped coach the U-20 Warhawk’s group the past few years.

Dwayne Purper

I discovered ultimate when my 6-foot-2 housemate kept blocking my shot in basketball and told me he found a sport I might be good at. I started playing pickup and leagues, then moved to club.

I was captain of Boneyard, a masters team from the Triangle, and have played old(er) guy club since then.

I have coached Learn to Play, Learn to Compete, mixed and girls league teams, Green Hope girls ultimate and a variety of clinics. I also have served on the Triangle Ultimate Youth Committee.

Katherine Li

I started playing ultimate during my first year of college in 2016 with Duke’s women’s ultimate team, Swerve! I went on to captain the team my senior year. I currently play for and co-captain Shiver, a women’s club team in the Triangle. I served as an AmeriCorps Up2Us coach with Triangle Ultimate in 2021 and coached kids of all ages and experience levels at the Boys and Girls Club in Durham, Learn to Play clinics, Youth Rec League, DPS middle school clinics, and TU summer camps in Durham and Chapel Hill. I also spent a season assistant coaching Duke Swerve after graduating. I am excited to continue growing women’s ultimate in the area as a coach for the Triangle Tourists this season!

Ken Rehder

I began playing ultimate on college, club, and league teams from 1982-1996. After an extended hiatus until 2008, I began playing again, joining the TRex Grand Masters team and then around 2014 helped to form my current team, the Great Grand Masters team Triaged.

My coaching experience includes many years of Durham Girls Soccer League, after which around 2014 I began coaching ultimate, first with the Durham School of the Arts High School Open and then the Girls team for three seasons. In between all that, I also coached multiple Triangle Ultimate Youth Summer League teams, U20 Girls Warhawks and most recently U17 Kitty Hawks and Shiver.

And I love Defense.

I grew up playing frisbee in Seattle WA throughout high school, for youth club and YCC teams (Nathan Hale HS, DiscNW YCC, Fryz, Seven Hills). Then I went to college in MN where I played for Carleton Syzygy and captained for two years. I now practice with Phoenix here in the triangle. I have been coaching ultimate since I was in high school for all ages, and I love getting to share this sport and the joy it brings me with so many young people. I spent 5 summers coaching DiscNW ultimate camps, and began coaching TU YCC and Triangle Tourists in 2021. I’m so excited to work with all of you and push you to become better players and teammates!

Mike Shyu

I have been involved in two internet startups in New York City and Beijing, where I was also fortunate enough to find time to play ultimate.  While in Beijing, I played and captained Beijing Big Brother and Beijing Bang.  I was blessed to play with many fantastic individuals and travel around Asia where I competed against a variety of teams (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Korea, Australia and Japan).

I moved to the Triangle in 2014 and started coaching the Green Hope HS Girls team till 2019.  In 2016, I started coaching U20 Girls Warhawks (National Title in 2017, 2018 & 2019) and co-founded Triangle Tourist with Brian Dobyns

In my free time, I can be found building furniture (#mikebuilds), rock climbing and spending time with my family.
